ISI Web of Science

How to create an email alert for new literature appearing at ISI Web of Science?

If in a hurry: The important thing is to use “Web of Science” as database, not the usual “All Databases” pane. Otherwise you will not be able to save your history and create email alerts.

What follows is a step-by-step explanation of how to setup an email alert for a topic in ISI Web of Science. As expected, to use this functionality, first of all you have to create an account with ISI Web of Science. That allows you to save your searches and create email alerts for such saved searches.

Note: You can get a larger version of every of the following screenshots by simply clicking on the respective image.

Figure 1: Sign in to ISI Web of Science. The “Sign in” button is located at the top left, marked here in red. You need to press “Sign in” even if you have no personal account yet, as you can register on the next screen.

Figure 3: Switch database to “Web of Science”. This is an important step, as only the “Web of Science” database can be used to create email alerts (don't ask why…).
Figure 4: Perform your search in ISI Web of Science as usual. You may enter whatever search terms you are interested in and want to get regular email updates of newly added records to this search.
Figure 5: Switch to the “Search history” pane. To be able to create email alerts, first of all you have to save your search history.
Figure 6: The “Search history pane. Here, you have an overview of all the searches you performed within your session. If you want to delete entries of the history, you can do that as well here. To actually create your email alert for a saved search, you have to press the marked “Ssve History / Create Alert” button on the top.
Figure 7: Save your search history and create an email alert. You have to give your searched history a name, ideally a short name that allows you to easily recognise what it is all about. Additionally, you can set here the email options. Don't forget to check the “Send me email alerts” box.
Figure 8: Logout from your personal account at ISI Web of Science. Don't forget to logout after you are finished with your work.
Figure 9: Logout screen after successful termination of the current session. To further use ISI Web of Science (then without personal login), simply follow the link to start a new session (“open a new connection”).
